The celebrity sex tape has a long and storied history, the details of which have captivated internet surfers for years now. In recent years there have been increasing numbers of celebrity sex tapes appearing on the web, a trend that owes its appearance to multiple causes. First, the proliferation of digital cameras, digital video recorders, and cell phone cameras has made it much easier to tape yourself having sex. Lots of people do it now; it’s just that most people are only interested in watching the results of the celebs that film themselves. Second, pornography and sex have penetrated our culture in such a profound way that it’s no longer embarrassing to be caught on film having sex. It can in fact be a good way to raise your profile and garner yourself some undeserved fame. Of course, a sex tape would be a disaster for an A list celebrity, but for someone with no discernible talent like Paris Hilton it’s perfect for raising her profile to astronomic levels.

All that being said, most celebrity sex tapes get released to the public for one reason only; money. The celebrity is almost never behind the actual release; instead the tape is sold by the sex partner or by a third party who has obtained the tape through nefarious means. The Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee tape was reportedly stolen out of their Malibu home and sold to a publisher. Paris Hilton’s infamous partner Rick Salomon sold the tape to an internet site and reaped a mighty profit from the sales. Even the tapes that are successfully blocked from distribution in the courts still manage to find their way onto the internet, like the one featuring Colin Farrell and centerfold Nicole Narain. In most of these cases the source of the leak is never discovered, mostly because it doesn’t actually damage the career of the famous person all that much.

The earliest known sex tape was filmed in 1969 between actress Sharon Tate and her husband, director Roman Polanski. This tape was never seen due to its having been seized in the Charles Manson murder investigation. There are rumors that it is now in the possession of a private collector, but these are unsubstantiated at best.

The current deluge of sex tapes really began in 1998 when Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee filmed themselves fucking on their boat. This was the first time a celebrity sex tape had really made the rounds, and the first time a celebrity sex tape included such lewd, graphic displays. The tape featured up close penetrations of Pamela and an awful lot of oral sex. The second most famous tape release occurred in 2004 when Rick Salomon released a tape of himself and Paris Hilton having sex. The video was distributed by Red Light District and sold like hotcakes, moving hundreds of thousands of copies. Predictably, you can see clips from it on the internet. Those are the two most famous tapes, but there are many others including Fred Durst with a model, Gena Lee Nolin and her husband, Tonya Harding and her husband, Kid Rock and some groupies, and actor Tom Sizemore. The latest tape features Saved by the Bell star Dustin Diamond, who played screech, screwing what appears to be two hookers in a hotel room.
